Kitty Whately – mezzo soprano & Edwige Herchenroder – piano

The album is, in sum, a valuable reminder that there’s more to French mélodies that the usual suspects – and that, at least on this repertory’s real world, women had plenty to sayGramophone.co.uk

Gramophone Podcast : Kitty Whately on unknown French song

Available here : https://lnk.to/CHAN20324

Herchenroder creates a lucid, crystalline sound on Potton Hall’s Steinway Model D. (…) The duo’s intimate musical dialogue is obvious : Whately’s expressive French consonants find their counterpart in Herchenroder’s hyper-sensitive touch, while vivid vocal storytelling is compelling glances by the coolness at the keyboard. (…) La Chevelure [Strohl] is voluptuous in its unfolding, the duet between the voice and the piano extraordinarily delicate’ Gramophone, Disc Horizons

‘This is an impressive release by one of the most adventurous rising voices in vocal litterature, and it breaks new ground in the performance of music women.’ Allmusic, Disc Horizons

Opusklassiek, disque Horizons

‘And this is a real work of devoted scholarship, I would say, to find this music and to bring it together so intelligently. (…) Kitty Whately brings such nuance and storytelling to the poetry of these songs. And Edwige Herchenroder, she is a French pianist, and you just heard in that last one, almost that sound of the Debussy ‘s Pagodes, that really sonorous playing, but also clarity and lots of color, lots of saturated color to the piano part.’ BBC Review on Radio 3

NOCTURNES, Zig-Zag Territoires | Outhere Music 2015

Rupert Charlesworth – tenor & Edwige Herchenroder – piano

Since the dawn of time, night and its mysteries have inspired poets and musicians. This recital for voice and piano recalls that: it is presented as a nocturnal promenade through diverse aesthetics, troubling atmospheres and profoundly contrasting emotions. The programme features the known (Schubert, Brahms, Fauré) and the lesser known (Bax, Finzi or Berkeley) to form a fascinating ode to the night.

‘Herchenroder’s disciplined playing shows a well-judged touch. She illuminates the harmonic shifts in the program’s three Schubert lieder with clarity and grace — as good an indicator of quality as any — and shows excellent timing in the long lines of Brahms’s “Der Gang zum Liebchen.’ David Shengold, New York Opera News Disc Nocturnes September 2015

Edwige Herchenroder’s accompaniments are well recorded and she makes the most of the nocturnal scene-painting, like the disappearing gleam in an empty sky that forms a postlude to Finzi’s ‘The Comet at Yell’ham’. A nice disc for late-night listening’ Richard Fairman, Gramophone Magazine Disc Nocturnes April 2015

‘L’accompagnement attentif et varié de Edwige Herchenroder est un régal, offrant un tapis de sonorités à se damnerClassica, Disque Nocturnes

‘Le piano enchanteur de la jeune Française Edwige Herchenroder apporte à ce programme toute la magie et la poésie requises.’ Resmusica, Disque Nocturnes

‘On est conquis par la délicatesse et la magnifique sonorité de Herchenroder (The Comet at Yell’ham de Finzi, l’Heure exquise de Hahn), sa pédalisation subtile, la légèreté sans sécheresse de son staccato (Carry her over the water de Berkeley, An die Laute de Schubert).’ Diapason, Disque Nocturnes
